MD08: Paste for restoration of tooth-supporting tissue

Description

MD08 is an adhesive paste for the treatment of mild to moderate periodontal disease. It contains the growth factor rhGDF-5 for the regeneration of periodontal ligament and cementum.

The product will be an injectable paste, which is applied directly into the periodontal pocket after scaling and root planing. MD08 can be applied surgically or in non-surgical procedures.

Scientific rationale

The growth factor rhGDF-5 as the active ingredient has a promising potential to regenerate periodontal tissue in addition to bone. Recently published scientific articles have shown that the growth factor can be found during tooth development and was shown to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells.

Due to its morphogenic potency during embryonic tooth development, GDF-5 is considered to stimulate the formation of tissue structures such as periodontal ligament, cementum and bone tissue due to guiding positional information of the surrounding tissue.

Intellectual property

A patent portfolio on the growth factor rhGDF-5 was licensed from Biopharm GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany, providing Scil with the global, exclusive rights on the growth factor for dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.
