Scil Technology develops regenerative products for orthopaedic and dental applications by using synthetic biomaterials to deliver pharmaceutically active proteins to induce local tissue regeneration.  The Company applies its proprietary technology and utilizes interdisciplinary approach for its product development.  Beside minimal invasive protein enriched medicinal products and devices the product candidates encompass coated ceramics, metals, organic and inorganic polymers.  Most products contain a specific protein that is designed to be released in a controlled manner over time.

Dedicated and highly experienced teams working side by side with an established network of contract manufacturing organizations has enabled the company to establish sophisticated and specific industrial GMP manufacturing processes of drug substance and drug products.

Growth factors used in Scil’s dental and orthopaedic applications 

rhGDF-5 - dental applications

rhGDF-5 is the recombinant form of the human Growth and Differentiation Factor 5, a member of the bone morphogenic protein (BMP) family.  Scil Technology licensed rhGDF-5 from Biopharm GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany with worldwide exclusive rights to develop, manufacture and commercialise products containing this growth factor for dental and maxillofacial applications.  GDF-5 exhibits a wide variety of activities in different tissues linked to different receptors and receptor pathways involved in GDF-5 signalling transduction.  The protein has been demonstrated to induce bone formation and modulate cartilage and ligament/tendon formation.  Various pre-clinical and clinical studies have supported its use for clinical applications including bone induction and soft tissue growth.

rhBMP variant - orthopaedic applications

Scil Technology uses a recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) variant derived from E. coli for orthopaedic applications.  This protein which has strong osteoinductive properties is the most effective protein for orthopaedic bone augmentation in long bone defects and in the most common surgical treatment of the spine, spinal fusion.

rhCD-RAP - cartilage applications

The growth factor rhCD-RAP represents a substantially novel molecule for cartilage regeneration.  It is highly specific for cartilage tissue and has been shown to play a crucial role during cartilage formation in embryonic development and in adult animals.  Moreover, rhCD-RAP stimulates the synthesis of cartilage matrix as demonstrated with cartilage cells harvested from osteoarthritis patients.  With the rhCD-RAP protein as a disease modifying agent interrupting the cartilage destruction process while inducing cartilage regeneration a completely novel therapeutic approach for treatment of cartilage defects is under development by our rhCD-RAP Product Line.

Scil Technology owns the worldwide patents concerning the substance and production of rhCD-RAP, the medical use of rhCD-RAP for cartilage repair and the use of rhCD-RAP as a diagnostic tool for cartilage diseases.
